MRCP Part 1 Examination
MRCP – Membership of the Royal College of Physicians – PART 1

is the entry-level examination accessible to doctors with a minimum of 12 months’ postgraduate experience in medical employment.

It covers a broad range of topics to ensure the level of knowledge is appropriate to physicians at the beginning of postgraduate training.

What are the eligibility criteria for the MRCP exam?

Candidates for the MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination must have had at least 12 months’ experience in medical employment by the date of the examination, i.e. must have completed Foundation Year 1 or equivalent.
Candidates must pass Part 1 before they are eligible to apply for the Part 2 Written, and Must pass part 2 before part 3 Clinical examinations (PACES).

Exam Format

The examination has a two-paper format. Each paper is 3 hours and contains 100 multiple choice questions in 'best of five' format.

This format, in addition to testing core knowledge and comprehension, also assesses the ability to interpret information and to solve clinical problems.
There will be five options - one correct answer and four alternatives to the correct answer. The four distractors will be closely related to the preferred option but less correct, therefore acting as plausible alternatives. The candidate chooses the best answer from the five possible answers. Each correct answer is awarded one mark; there is no negative marking.

Number of permitted attempts at MRCP examinations

Candidates are permitted a maximum of six attempts at each part of the MRCP(UK) diploma (as
required by the GMC). After six attempts, a candidate will be required to undertake additional
educational/training experience for each re-sit and submit evidence of this

Examination eligibility period

Candidates who do not pass the Part 2 Written and PACES examinations within seven years of
passing the Part 1 Examination will be required to take and pass the Part 1 Examination again.
